The first patent issued to Peter J. Scharbach in 1900. He probably knew of the previous patents issued for the same device, and was working forward from there. This arrangement was probably not a working model, it would have been necessary to stop pedaling while shifting because a single pinion gear needed to move back and forth between the driving gear. Synchronizing for shifting smoothly would have been a problem. |
